The Lusatian Mountains form a perfect link between the surrounding landscapes – the sandstone formations and rock towns from Bohemian Switzerland, the volcanic nature and the conical peaks rising from the wooded hills of the Bohemian Central Highlands, and the elongated ridges of the Jizera Mountains. All of this forms a unique whole where the soul is soothed, and eyes cannot get enough of the picturesque landscape. And then, there are also the remarkable traces of human life – towns and villages, castles, churches and chapels, glassworks, rock theatres, lookout towers, and tourist huts that remember the very beginnings of tourism. Finally, there are also small concrete fortresses, reminders of the determination to defend one’s own borders.
The seats of the local masters
Guard castles grew like mushrooms after rain along the old trade route from Prague to Zittau. Some became charming castles, others turned into romantic ruins.
